The land around the Bolgheri area, nested between the sea and the gentle inland hills, is one of the most typical examples of the Tuscan Maremma landscape, making the area quite unique. The history of this land is marked by the profound relationship between its people and their natural habitat. Recent industrial and farming trends have partly deprived vast tracts of farmland of their original purpose, resulting in a population drain and in the neglect of important architectural assets such as castles, hunting lodges, churches, farm buildings like farmhouses, mills and stables. Out of a desire to safeguard and respect tradition, local culture and the environment, a careful analysis of single cases has been necessary before undertaking restoration work intended to restore this abandoned legacy to its original uses or before finding new residential or tourist uses.
The Guado al Tasso estate (Tenuta di Guado al Tasso) is one such case. The estate is owned by internationally known winemakers and it lies slightly south of Bolgheri with a surface area of some 1000 hectares, over 300 of which are vineyards. It stretches from the coast to the hilly slopes that lie to the East. The Bernardo Tori Practice has been working in the area for some time now, upgrading several farms buildings which are no longer used for farming purposes, reconverting them to high quality holiday homes for the agritourism business that the company has developed in parallel to its wine making and farming activities.
